Theo van Doesburg was one of the leaders of the De Stijl movement, and pioneered with Mondrian the abstract art movement. His paintings also made you think, but they were almost exclusively cubes and geometric shapes. His paintings make people search for a meaning, and has inspired me to use that concept in my art.

I like this because it's kind of like dada, which is pretty much just rebelling to the kind of art examples set from an earlier time. Everyone was all into how beautiful and detailed a painting is and how it would take someone multiple years to finish. Art can still be cool and worth something, even if they dont take years to make. Like you said, it also makes people think of a meaning behind it, even if there isnt one at all.
