When looking at one of Dali's paintings one seems to get lost in it and in their own dream world. Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was famous for his surrealism paintings. Surrealism was a 20th century art movement that sought to push the boundaries of art by creating something unlocked in the unconscious mind. Dali created his paintings by painting out thoughts, visions, and dreams that he had. He continually looked at not only art but also life around him in an abstract, dream-like kind of way. His paintings and even his way of life were art. And this inspired me for my painting.
In this painting I got a lot of inspiration for making a sort of surreal painting of myself. The birds in the background look like birds that symbolize death (vultures, crows, and ravens). The whole landscape is very lonely and disheartening. I wanted to go for an uneasy effect like this painting has but i wanted something a bit different too, i wanted color and more inpiration. So I found this painting by Dali...
I loved the profile shot of someone looking at something threatening in the distance. Although this painting has different meanings then i was going for I liked the views, angles, and use of ominous colors to keep the viewer almost transfixed in this dream painting. He's been a huge inspiration of mine for years, especially when those closest to me wouldn't understand why i created the things I did. Dali was an amazing and misunderstood artist who helped open up a whole new way of making art. He pushed limits and didn't take no for an answer, especially when the one giving the answer was an art critic. He is an amazing example for those striving to become true artists and creating art no matter what the cost.
Here is an interview of him...he's quite surreal and interesting himself...

This does look like the painting you are doing Olivia. I see what you're taking about referring to the dark tones and use of the profile shot which resembles yours. The colors chosen in the painting directly above give a dark depressing feel to the painting while the bright colors used in yours symbolize more of a hopeful feel while staying true to the seriousness and intenseness of the painting by using the dark colors around your face.
ReplyDeleteCreepy art like this is awesome!! its very intriguing and seems so depressing and sullen that it shouldnt draw so much attention. I love these pieces and i find them really open to interpretation instead of stating a clear point it leaves a little for the interpretation of the viewer.

The fact the pictures are so abnormal caught my attention. It made me stop and really look at the picture to understand it better. When you look at it you really feel the sense of hopelessness of the pictures and a tone of heartache. The pictures are a little odd but they really catch your eye to get a better appreciation of them.

ReplyDeleteSalvador Dali's work is kinda creepy to look at but its absolutely fascinating! The colors are so vibrant and even thought some of his pieces are painted in happy colors, the image isnt a happy one. His pieces are always kinda off. I can see how you got inspired. From what I have seen of your project, I think you have captured the drama of his art!
ReplyDeleteI really like Salvador Dali's art pieces, despite their bizarreness. The picture you posted (the one with the green tint), is interesting because it also makes a skull. I would guess that none of us can interpret the meaning of this art like Dali can, because when we see it, we see a weird, dramatic looking art piece. I really like the abstractness of it.
