Johanes Vermeer by Daniel Martinez

Possible portrait of himself

Johannes Vermeer is a Dutch painter who's works were widely recognized by a lot of modern era critics for his attention to lighting and detail. He is unlike a lot of artists in that very little is known about him and his early life. Even his appearance is an enigma to most. What is known about him is that he studied his father and his works and took up his father's format. In fact, art was in a sense the family business, a business he took up when he was old enough. He began painting professionally at around 1663. He began working slowly, improving his craft over the years. He worked mainly in Delft, his hometown. In 1975 he died, two years after going into a frenzy one day due to possible financial pressures.

Vermeer's style included the use of very expensive pigments in his paintings, such as ultramarine or lapis lazui, to make his paintings far more lavish in design and detail. He was a realist to the core, utilizing lighting. He uses natural colors and colors that blend together fluidly to create a realistic design that was lavish as well as believable.
