Riusuke Fukahori by Mary Glatt

Riusuke Fukahori paints goldfish. But these aren't just plain, boring drawings of goldfish. These are three-dimensional goldfish that look real enough to fool almost anyone. By painting different parts of the fish onto layers of clear resin, Fukahori achieves a level of realism rarely seen in painting. An incredible attention to detail is clearly evident, right down to the individual scales that can be seen on the fish. Fukahori was born in 1973 in central Japan, and graduated from art school in 1995. In 2000, he got his start with goldfish. He had hit a slump, and was thinking about giving up art, when he saw a tank with a goldfish in it. The fish was sick and swimming in filthy water, but Fukahori thought she was beautiful, and immediately painted her. That was just the beginning.

  1. I never new that people could draw goldfish in three dimensions, make it look so real and amazing, but I guess I just got the answer to my question by looking at this blog. It sounds like he is a pretty good three dimensional artist and spends a lot of time on his work.

  3. his absolutely blow my mind, it seemed at first that he had 3D objects in the clear stuff. But all it was is paint, it was a 2D piece that was made into a 3D piece. This must take a lot of time and accuracy. I am very interested in looking at more of this mans work.

  4. When I first saw the picture, I completely thought that it was a photograph that someone had taken. When I read it was a PAINTING, I had to go and watch the video. Amazing.

  5. I saw this on thisiscolossal.com a few months ago. I absolutely love this and am looking into making something like this for some personal projects for my portfolio. His way of creating art is a long process that requires a lot of patience, time, dedication, and pure talent. I love this man's work and I'm glad you posted this ahaha.

  6. This is absolutly amazing, it's hard to believe this can be done with paint. This shows how far a spark of creativity and a lot of patience can go. I wish I could be as good as him! -Tori Gutierrez
